StartFragmentSo, what is our best line of defense in reducing risk of cancer if we can’t escape our environment? The answer simply lies in a four-letter word from the “urban” dictionary of modern medicine: M – O – V – E. Yes, it really is that simple. Exercise is the best form of preventive medicine and one of the few things in life that is actually free and without hidden charges. Not only is it free, it’s also something that we have a sense of control over. As the famous line goes, “double your pleasure, double your fun”. For those of you who remember the vintage 80’s Doublemint gum commercial and jingle, here’s today’s remix by Chris Brown, an American singer, songwriter, and dancer:EndFragment

If it’s really that simple, then why do so many Americans make excuses when it comes to diet and exercise? You don’t have to convince me that leisure activities are often hampered by long commutes and demanding work schedules; however, when we do find a little down time, we obsess over modern technologies (cell phones and social media for one) which not only makes us less productive but introduces a much more sedentary lifestyle. I’ll be the first to admit that my cell phone travels everywhere with me much like the rest of America, but I’ve also learned to take advantage of today’s modern innovations and time-savings by incorporating exercise into my seven daily habits. After all, “we first make our habits, and then our habits make us”~ John Dryden.

What it really boils down to is self-accountability and changing one’s mind-set. You don’t need fancy equipment either, so stop making excuses and get MOVING. Walking, running, yoga, pilates, tai chi, dance, and weight resistance can all be done on a fixed income in the privacy and comfort of your own home or local recreational trail. Exercise should be as equally as important as planning your next meal, or brushing your teeth for that matter (if you’re not brushing twice a day, you better be at least flossing or using an antiseptic rinse before bed. A study published in the Journal of Periodontology suggests that periodontal disease is linked to cardiovascular disease†).

The only bad workout is no workout. U.S. guidelines recommend 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity at least five days a week in significantly reducing your risk of cancer in addition to quitting smoking. Don’t have thirty minutes to spare? 10-15 minutes will do the trick. Zero is not your hero when it comes to diet and exercise.

We all need to take responsibly for our own health in a day and age where U.S. life expectancy is on the rise despite an explosive epidemic of obesity in America† further compounding today’s health care crisis where senior living will soon become a commodity. Why leave decisions about your own health in the hands of government whose agenda is to put a price tag on human life in reducing the deficit. Take matters into your own hands. Have you read the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010? Click here for details. The length might discourage some from reading its entirety but why leave public education to partisanship?

I leave with you one known fact, which is disease does not discriminate. It sees no age, race, color, creed, or status. No one is exempt. It can strike at any moment; turn your life upside down like a thief in the night. The time to act is now and it’s called PREVENTION. Improve your odds today. Don’t gamble with your own life- – the greatest gift of all.
