In igniting intellectual curiosity, you are probably asking yourself, “What does a girl from the Heartland know about the environment anyway?” A noteworthy and valid question in earning credibility with readers I might add. So, let’s begin. Not only am I fortunate to be employed by a global asset management firm evaluating catastrophic risks on commercial property from acts of terrorism to pollution legal liability and seismic, I also happen to live in a state heavily industrialized in the production of livestock and crops. I am all too familiar with genetically modified organisms (GMO’s), pesticides, insecticides, and various other forms of pollution and hazardous substances, which we’ll explore later on down the road.

Let’s face it. If you’re living and breathing today, YOU are toxic. We are all toxic to some degree, which only exacerbates dietary causes of chronic inflammation; a perfect storm and precursor to the onset of many chronic diseases. Setting aside statistics and all biases, I ask that you be your own judge. Look around you. And as you reflect on casual conversations with ordinary-everyday people under enormous economic and social pressures, from friends and family, to the gleeful clerk at your local hardware store, neighbor, or pastor; of this group, how many allergy sufferers or people with common chronic ailments such as arthritis and ulcerative colitis do you know of? From peanut allergies, to common skin disorders, not to mention food intolerances from lactose to gluten. And, let’s not forget an alarming rise in cancer rates, metabolic disorders, and autoimmunity, including diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid / hormonal imbalances……and the list goes on.

So, why are we experiencing such an alarming rise in cancer rates from newborns to adolescents and young adults, second to diet and lifestyle? Well, the one common denominator [arguably] is our environment and its degradation occurring both naturally and at the hands of mankind driven by a growing obsession for modern luxuries and quick profits; from climate changes and its effect on global agriculture, to implications of electromagnetic pollution, and hazardous substances and pollutants that continue to plague our soil, air, water, and food supply, all purportedly affecting human health worldwide while contributing to an array of health problems and chronic inflammation [including cancerous transformation] through epigenetic modifications, second to diet and lifestyle.

Yes, senseless and cowardly acts of terrorism remains a global threat and always will; however it’s a much more manageable risk compared to cancer, a known terrorist of its own kind on the prowl, lurking silently in the background, preying on its victims ready to pounce on when most vulnerable. In America, a staggering one in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime while the number of new cases of cancer is set to nearly double by the year 2050, according to the latest statistics.†

There is growing evidence that acute inflammatory and metabolic disease processes, including cancer† , are not only influenced by diet and lifestyle, but also our environment. Many leading experts believe, as I do, that our genetics may load the gun, but it’s our environment that actually pulls the trigger. Environmental influences that warrant more science and regulation than rhetoric.

No, I don’t have all the answers. I am simply looking for answers to a pandemic that will someday touch each of our lives. This website will serve as a vehicle to lobby and drive change in Washington DC while raising awareness to various causes, faculties, and services that I wholly trust and endorse.

I invite you to spend the time to self-educate yourself. Knowledge is power. I hope you will join me on this journey as we stand united in declaring a global war on cancer. We may lose a few battles in the process but together we will win the war through perseverance.
